Rotary International joins up with KidsOut and Bakers Dolphin Coaches for trip to Longleat
Children from four Weston-super-Mare schools boarded a Bakers Dolphin coach for a trip on the wild-side, in the company of the local Rotary Club.
Deserving youngsters from Windwhistle, Ashcombe, Bournville and Christchurch schools all enjoyed a fun-filled day out at Longleat Safari Park last week.
Their adventure began when they boarded a 53-seater Bakers Dolphin tour coach, which took them all to Morrisons, where they enjoyed a full fried breakfast ahead of their big day.
Then it was back on board the coach and off to the Wiltshire wildlife haven.
Every year, Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland joins up with KidsOut, the fun and happiness charity, to take some 25,000 children on a day trip, either to the seaside, a theme park, adventure playground or zoo.
For around 10 years, the Rotary Club of Weston-super-Mare has taken a party of children from the resort to Longleat.
More than 30 children went on the trip, accompanied by their teachers and six members of the Rotary Club. They were among 1,000 children from Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset, and the Swindon areas who enjoyed the KidsOut/Rotary Club experience.
They enjoyed all the delights Longleat has to offer, including a boat ride on the lake, where children could feed the sea lions, and many other attractions.
Then they were driven, on board their Bakers Dolphin coach, slowly through the safari park so that they could enjoy a close encounter with the lions of Longleat, and many other animals – although the coach did wisely steer clear of the mischievous monkeys.
Rotary Club Member Clive Morris said: “All the children have had some type of difficulty to face in their lives, and this day out is a way of giving them a fun day to remember.
“The coach was nothing like a normal school bus. It felt very new, and was a nice and comfortable Mercedes. The facilities on board were excellent, which really helped make the day such a success.
“When we were driving through the safari park, the driver put on a CD which contained a commentary, which really enhanced the experience.
“I don’t think all coach companies would go to those extra lengths.
“Unfortunately, on the way home, we were unavoidably delayed in very heavy traffic, which made us an hour late, but throughout the journey home the children were chatting away happily, singing and laughing, at the end of what must have been a very long and tiring day for them.
“The driver, Richard Adams, congratulated them for their good behaviour.
“Bakers Dolphin have always provided an excellent service to us on these special days, and this year was no exception. Richard was excellent, and played a big part in ensuring this was a very memorable day for the children.”
