Kings Ferry first with onboard wireless broadband service

Award-winning The Kings Ferry Travel Group has become the first coach operator in the world to introduce an onboard wireless broadband service for passengers.

The system enables passengers with laptops and notebook computers to surf the Internet and send and receive e-mails while they are on the move. The onboard technology offers a safe, secure connection via 3G or GPRS and prevents any unauthorised access outside the coach.

Kent-based The Kings Ferry has invited regular customers to put the new system to the test and extensive trials are now being carried out on two of the company’s commuter coaches into London.

The Kings Ferry’s managing director, Steve O’Neill, said: ‘We had a fantastic response from our customers, with dozens asking to be included in the trials. We’ve already had very positive feedback from passengers and early results indicate excellent service in terms of connectivity and speed.

‘Business executives travelling with us are particularly excited at the prospect of using this service to make full use of their commuting time in and out of London.’

The wireless Internet trials follow hot on the heels of the launch of The Kings Ferry’s unique Coachtrack satellite navigation and tracking system.

Mr O’Neill said: ‘Since we started 38 years ago, The Kings Ferry has always pioneered technological advances in the coach industry, from two-way radios and cell phones to air conditioning.

‘After introducing Coachtrack this summer, wireless broadband seemed like the natural progression - so when we were offered the UK rights to this service, we couldn’t wait to become involved.’

Mr O’Neill believes that the technology The Kings Ferry is trialling will have far-reaching benefits for the coach industry, as well as the potential to launch public transport into the digital age.

He said: ‘If other coach and bus operators feel this wireless broadband system could benefit their customers, we’d be more than happy to talk to them. They can call us on 01634 377577 or email sales@thekingsferry.co.uk.’
